TOP 10 THINGS TO DO & SEE IN NORTH SLIGO

  1. Strandhill – Beautiful seaside village with coffee shops, ice cream parlour, surfing and amazing walk up knocknarea Mountain to Queen Meave’s Cairn (Acient Queen of Connacht). Strandhill Peoples Market every Sunday 11am to 3pm. Take N15 into Sligo town and turn right at train station, its clearly marked and approx 25min drive.
  1. Rosses Point – Small Sea Side Village with beautiful beaches and 2 good bars / restaurants – Austies Bar & Restaurant – Harrys Bar & Restaurant. Lovely spot for a walk and keep an eye out for Irelands most unique light house, The Metal Man ! Well worth a visit. Take n15 to Sligo and turn right after petrol stations, Rosses Point is well signed, 15 minutes.
  1. Drumcliffe Church – Final resting place of the poet W.B.Yeats and also remains of 6th Century Monastic Settlement. St.Columcille formed a monastery here in 575AD Drumcliffe High Cross and Round Tower remain to this day. Look for round tower on road side just 5 minutes away. Lovely Ice Cream Cabin here also.
  2. Lissadell House & Gardens / Quiet Beach – Old Manor house with good historical archive detailing irish history. Coffe Shop & Walled Gardens on site. Turn left at end of lane and next right just 200 meters down the road into Carney Village, follow signs to Lissadell House. 10 minutes.
  1. Raghly Harbour – quiet but beautiful scenic drive along the Maugherow Peninsula. Beautiful coastal views. 20 minutes drive, just 10 minutes past Lissadell House.
  1. Glencar Lake & Water Falls – Stunning Scenery through the Glencar Valley with Copes Mountain to your right and Benbulben & Kings Mountain to your left. There are 2 waterfalls:
  2. Devils Chimney – (Irelands Highest Waterfall) approx half way down the lake look for a small Lay-By / Carpark with wooden fence, way marked walk up the mountain with breathtaking views of the whole valley.
  3. Glencar Waterfall – follow the road to the end of the lake and there is a clearly marked walk way from the carpark. Tea Shed, toilets and small play ground also at end of lake. Turn left at end of lane and next left again just 200 meters down the road, it’s a straight 10 to 15 min drive to the lake.
  1. Benbulben Forest Walk – Beautiful looped forest walk right at the base of Benbulben Mountain, stunning views of the surrounding land and sea scape. Turn right at end of the lane and approx 1km up the road, turn right and up a very steep hill to carpark. Well signed, 5 minutes away.

Streedagh Beach – Beautiful long sandy beach with great views of the surrounding landscape. 3 Spanish armada ships from 1588 were wrecked off the coast here and their remains are still mainly intact to this day (not visible from the beach) but a lot of history and information available at the beach. Turn left in Grange Village, well signed, approx 15 minutes away.

Gleniff Horseshoe Valley – amazing 10km looped drive between Benwiskin Mountain and Truskmore Mountain, Irelands highest cave, Diarmud & Grainnes Cave, is located at the rear of the valley behind an old school house – see if you can find it ? Nice drive with riverside picnic area. Steeped in Irish Mythology & History. Turn right in Cliffony Village. Approx 20 min drive away.
  3. Mullaghmore Harbour, Beach and Sea Drive – A truly beautiful village with amazing scenery, hotels, bars and seafood restaurant. Very scenic looped sea drive around Mullaghmore Head and Classie Bawn Castle. A must see location, turn left in Cliffoney Village, approx 20 minute drive.
